JBA Seed Potato problem
« on: February 10, 2014, 08:52 »
Hi my Seed spuds have arrived from JBA seed potatoes via my allotment society.

They don't look good at all with long straggly white chits that are about 6 inches long & some of the Spuds are quite wet!!

An old timer on our site told me to rub the long chits off & let the Spud start all over again. Will this work or do I need to buy new seed spuds?

It'll work. I'm surprised at JBA, though.

Have they been somewhere else in the meantime?

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yes it will work as long as they haven't been kept too wet for too long and have started to rot.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Me thinks they have been in the shed at for a while at the plot shop first... Strange for JBA to supply like that.

I would agree with Gavin. They will be fine with the chits rubbed off but grumble at your allot shop, if they arrived from JBA in that state then JBA will want to know about it.

I collected them yesterday which was the 1st date that we could get them. I will speak to our Lottie Secretary & see when & from what route we got them from JBA and where they have been since. What has happened in previous years is that they arrive on the site & you are expected to collect them the same day. But I will find out.

Let us know what the outcome is. I've ordered seed potatoes from JBA for a friend. Delivery end of February, as they didn't want them before. Hope they'll be OK.

As others have said, very strange. Mine arrived on the requested date and in rude health.  They are now chitting away happily, and the quality is better than last year.

They must have been so we here quite warm to have developed such long growth.  Even the ones in the shops haven't had a chance to do that yet!!

I'd agree with the others about JBA. They are usually very good with deliveries and will not send out if frost is forecast or there is any other chance of delay or damage during transit. Mine have always arrived in perfect condition.

I've had JBA tatties over the years, and they arrived perfectly, so I can't believe they left JBA in that condition - sounds like something has gone wrong in the supply chain afterwards :(   Not the end of the world, but very disapointing for you

JBA are always very good for me. I did think some Charlotte seed were very big last year so not a lot in number for the weight but I contacted them with details and they sent me a modest top up amount. I suspect the seed potatoes in your case may have been stuck somewhere with a courier in which case let JBA know so they can fix the problem.

I haven't bought potatoes from J BA but I bought some of their potatoe pots I am really pleased with them. They were the best price around and are very strong.  I am thinking about getting some planted in my unheated greenhouse but snow forecast so might wait.

I cannot imagine JBA ever sending out potatoes in that sort of condition - I think they would rather send none at all than send them out like that!
