poorly tommies?
« on: April 21, 2011, 14:10 »
having a little bother with my tomato seedlings....they seem to be slowly dying off

they are on a warm bright windowsill and are about 5 inches high 4 varieties :- Ildi, gardeners delight, a beefsteak one and garden pearl.

leaves are turning brown from the tips then slowly dying off and even the growing stem on one of the garden pearl has died off completely.

piccies

any ideas why this is happening please...is it to hot in the window during the day if so i can whip them out during the day ....never ever had this problem before and done everything the same as usual.

thanks
R.I.P Bobby Smiler Smith......love you always little fella.

Are you watering the soil or are you spraying the entire plant?

Could be sun scorch, also don't overwater - lift the pot and get used to the weight of it when they need watering.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Can't be sun scorch if you are only watering the soil.  Could be foot rot though which seedlings can get.

let any water you use warm up, let it stand -- don't use fresh from tap and dont over water. Sun may be too bright most of day especially as soil will be warming up as well. Plants may need potting on if roots already filling space available. Potting compost has little food value and only lasts about 3 to 4 weeks so fresh compost may help.
If you have any seeds left get them sown as a backup now and try a different propogating location. best of luck.

Looks like sun scorch to me. Snip any damaged leaves off , tomatoes are tough and can lose a lot of leaf without a problem .
I often snip off the seed leaves when they start to wither and then pot the plants on deep.

It is best not to water the soil ,if the pot is dry water 1/2" into the tray and let them soak it up.

Can i see green algae on the surface of the soil or is it just light through the leaves? If it is algae you could be over watering.
Is it soil or compost? A good compost is normally more free draining than topsoil and less likely to damping off problems.
