Crimson crush tomatoes- is the flavour any good?
« on: January 15, 2024, 16:46 »
Planning this year’s planting and your views are welcome! A couple of years ago I planted some grafted CC plants. I was disappointed with the flavour and annoyingly it turned out to be a very dry summer and there was no blight whatsoever on the plot. I have since read that grafted plants often don’t deliver in flavour so I’m thinking of trying them again, with a few different varieties such as Costolutto fiorentino and Stupice. Thanks for any feedback.

I wasn't impressed with the flavour, as a salad tomato - they just gave me a reliable yield for making passata, each year.

I didn't mind them, they produced from late July for me although nowhere near as much as indoor toms.id have said they were of average flavour with a very nice firm texture. They were very blight resistant for me, I wasn't able to get ripe outdoor toms otherwise for 3 out of the last 4 years.  I'm trying a few other blight resistant varieties this year though instead and a wild tomato

Thanks guys that’s as I suspected. I might grow a couple for making sauce then, and hope the weather gods are with us tomato growers this summer.

My wife and I actually like the taste of these tomatoes, a slightly acidic flavour.

"I'm trying a few other blight resistant varieties this year though instead and a wild tomato". What are the names of those other varieties?

Nagina, fantasio, crimson plum so far

Can't remember the name of the wild one, I think they produce loads of currant sized toms so a bit of a novelty

Are Fantasio and Nagina as blight resistant as Crimson Crush, does anyone know?

What is your experience, Snow?

I don't know, not tried them before. I've tried the crimson cherry toms and they were pretty resistant

Sorry, I misunderstood your message. I thought you had tried them. The Crimson Crush and the beefsteak ones produced by the same people are fiercely resistant, considering the biblical rain we had here in Belgium last year.

I've grown Fantasio several times in the greenhouse and they seem to resist blight longer and crop later into the season than most tomatoes.  Never tried them outside though.
