Potatoes
« on: February 26, 2021, 21:26 »
Last year was my first, some triumphs some fails, over all I was happy. Potatoes not planted last year so my question is. Will planting at a 1 foot space up the line and 2 foot between lines be sufficient. I know I have to build up the sides. Thank You.

chris i think distance is different for early or main  we are guilty of too close with most that we
grow trying to make the most our space i think if they are too close you end up with more small
potatoes,
from bow like to grow

Hello try my grandads tried and tested method of planting potatoes dig a trench 12 inches deep 12 inches wide put muck in the bottom, then place a potato one at the front of a boot one behind that's about the right spacing ,fill trench in and make next row 2foot from edge of last row,if you have children or grandchildren you can adjust the spacing by getting them to plant them for you  jezza

 That is the real the old meaning of a 'foot'

I think 2ft between rows is fine, and I do plant early potatoes about a foot apart in the row, but give 2nds and maincrop about 18ins between them.

yes i agree with Mum 18ins between each potatoes and 2ft between each row because i use my rotavator and ridge tool to open and close the trench its set at 2ft spacing when finishing the ridge
