Title: Automatic watering system. Anyone built one?
Post by: Yana on June 04, 2014, 13:04
Last year we went away for a week and left the watering of the garden pots/tubs and two greenhouses to a friend. In return for watering, I said to help themselves to anything that was ripe and would have spoiled by the time we got back.
Said friend admitted that they had a bountiful supply of chillies, peppers and tomatoes, enough to fill several bags and put into their freezer and had watered as we asked but that it was awkward in the greenhouse as the hose was always getting into a tangle. Hence the dried up and sad looking plants on our return.
To get to the point of this ......
I don't want to ask again this year and wondered if anyone had built their own automatic watering system and would be willing to offer advice, recommend suppliers and (here comes the cheeky bit) plans. I've got two greenhouses, 10' x 6' and 8' x 6' and new this year, a wooden greenhouse/shed combo with a 10' x8' greenhouse section. They are all very close to a mains pressure outside tap. The larger one has cucumbers in the ground and aubergines in pots on staging. The smaller one has tomatoes on both sides in the ground in grow pots and the wooden one will have chillies and peppers in pots on the staging.

I'm quite DIY savvy so looking forward to this project.
Thanks  :D

could you use a drip hose attached to the mains tap with a timer?

It all depends on how elaborate you want it to be and how much you want to spend Yana.  I've made a couple up with automatic timers, 13mm irrigation pipe (+fittings) and a few cheap drip irrigation kits.  :)

Well, it has taken a while but it is finished.
Now have watering on a pre-programmed timer to the three greenhouses and a total of 146 drippers in situ. It's been a god send in the hot weather and even though there are a lot of drippers, the layout of the main tubing feeding the tubing which has the micro-pipe for the drippers does not show a loss in pressure over the whole system.
Next year I will be able to put the system in place whilst the plants are all small which will be much easier.
