Chilly toms?
« on: March 14, 2015, 10:44 »
Hi,

I've got some fine tomatoes growing on the kitchen windowsill. Or I did have. (I plant them early here because it dodges the worst of the blight later in the season). I potted them on a couple of weeks back into two planters which should give them sufficient space until it's warm enough outside. But over the last week I've been putting them in the sun on the picnic table during the day as it was over 15 degrees out there, then bringing them in in the evening.
So, the plants in one of the planters have started going pale, papery and falling off. My question is, whether this is a disease, or stress? (because it got a bit colder suddenly once or twice and the plants were out a bit long).
I'm wondering whether to take action or not. If it's stress, they can stay warm and cosy and recover by themselves. But if it's a disease and I do nothing, I might lose the lot.
Any thoughts?

Could you post a photograph?  Without seeing, it is hard to assess what's wrong.  Could be cold; could be a virus - or any number of other things.

Maybe looks a bit like grey mold.

Could it not just be the wind? It has been warm some days but the wind has still been a bit keen. I've certainly felt it so the tender soft plant would, more so ?

I don't think it's mould, seems less colorful/gory than that photo :-)

I hope it is just the wind. It's certainly been biting at times. I'll try keeping them wrapped up nice and warm in the kitchen and hope for the best!

If it wasn't for the time of year, I would have guessed at sun scorch.

Could they have got scorched through the kitchen window? Rather than outside?

As it is just one plant, then I don't think it is the wind or outside temps as that would affect them all. Is it showing more on one side of the plant? If so, then it could be sun scorch, especially if the leaves had water on them because the droplets act like a mirror and over-warms the leaves which, especially as they have been outside in a colder temp, would be a bit of a change in temp for them to suddenly acclimatise to (if that makes any sense).
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
