Not the usual chutney
« on: September 20, 2012, 16:46 »
Anyone made any 'not quite run of the mill' chutney.

Today i've  made 2 little jars of fig and orange chutney and it is so delicious and looks beautiful
Its the sort of chutney to put on your plate with cold meat like turkey or perhaps ham, not in a cheese sandwich.
As soon as I've got 6 more figs ripe I'll make another lot and write down the recipe as i go if anyone wants it, i sort of made it up as i went along this time but can remember more or less how the quantities looked ::)

Anyone else made any little jars of something special

This is my fig and orange

This looks so beautiful in the jar!  I'd just come onto the forum to post a message asking if anyone had any good recipes for fresh figs (not because I've grown them, but because they're on special off at Lidl for 24p each!) ... I'll therefore wait with bated breath till you post your recipe!

Looks lovely  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

That looks gorgeous. I bet it would go really well with some home pate and sourdough bread too.

Can't wait for the recipe. :D

Do you just want recipes for chutney and jam?
I have a recipe for fig and rosewater tart with rosewater cream somewhere.

Thanks all, does look nice doesn't it

Cheshirecheese, if i had to buy figs i would make something special like a tart, as Mrs Ball suggested, or eat them fresh, perhaps with a bit of blue cheese or ham.

I love them and they have done surprisingly well in this bad summer.

I picked 15 the other afternoon and ate 9 straight off the tree  I didn't have a very good night

I didn't dare eat the last 6 so made the chutney. :D

Just out of interest, how hardy fig trees, and where do you grow yours?  i.e. up against a wall or in a sheltered spot away from the wind?

Mine is in a very warm sheltered spot against a wall and facing west. Its in the ground and is very rampant  ::) I think they are quite hardy and will stand colder conditions than mine get here :)

I have another in a biggish pot grown as a standard and its pathetic in comparison to the one in the ground. It was a pressie from OH 6 years ago and has never produced a fig.  :(

they love to go REALLY deep with their roots. as they are from hot dry climates where they have to go down to find water, so not surprised not doing so well in a pot.
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Figs always look so delicious but it's one of the few fruits that I really, really don't like the taste of :)

over in greece i made a ton of green tomatoe chutney that we had for ages , one dat after an inspection of it noticed it had gone very dark so it took some out and blitzed it very smooth and made brown sauce out f it , which we love and in greece at the time was over 2 euros for a skinny bottle so was well pleased but doesent realy answer your question
sorry

That's interesting, because it's a pot I was thinking of!  I do have a spare bit of bed in the veg patch up against a south facing wall (well, wooden fence), so that might be an idea as the soil on that side can get on the dry side in the summer.  That's where my peach is, and that usually does well  :)

... As for your original question, I do actually make a chutney with ready-to-eat figs - Pear, Fig & Walnut which everyone else seems to enjoy but I find a bit on the sweet side!  My favourite is Rhubarb & Ginger, as the flavour of the rhubarb really shines through (I think I added it to the recipe section on here a while back).
