Vegetable juice?
« on: September 07, 2009, 11:04 »
Hi everyone,

I've  been reading about vegetable juicing, including wheatgrass and I was wondering if any on here are into it and can offer their opinion? Which machines are best etc. I like what I'm reading as far as health is concerned.

TIA

Cheers
 :)
Best Regards,

I asked for info on juicers about a month ago, and never got a reply. Poolfield as well.
I get the impression that nobody uses them ? ? ?

I have had a juicer for three years, tried loads of different recepies, most of them do not taste too yummy :tongue2:  But the worst part of it is cleaning my machine...  it is really, really fiddly and takes ages just to wash it.... probably there are different sorts now that are much improved, but to me it was not worth either the trouble or the taste....  just chew the veggies well and you get the same result :D :D

Hi Brambles: is it possible to get different sized "filters" for your machine? What we're looking for is something to gets pips out fruit (and toms) that gone through the blender.
How does the machine extract the juice?
thanks

Thanks for the replies ... I had been wondering what to do with excess produce? and juicing made a lot of sence, as I was going to get all the nurishment in much less bulk. It also ment some veggies that are not that popular in the household would also be used up, and the research seems to show outstanding results to human health.

Cheers

I had a Phillips juicer, it worked by centrifugal action - the juice got forced out through the sides of a metal mesh basket with really tiny holes.

Although the juice was really nice, it was definitely a nightmare to clean as the pulp etc got stuck in the mesh holes.  It might have been OK in a dishwasher but I don't have one of those.  I gave it away as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle and didn't want the juice badly enough to persist.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They don't come clean in the dishwasher either, you just get washed stuck on bits

I'm so glad I only borrowed one to try first. I honestly think that with fruit the easiest option is one of those "wand blenders" if you understand what I mean. Wizz the fruit in the tall jug thing that comes with the better ones and then seive the liquid. Easy to wash if you do it straight away.

Hi Tode, no I have been unable to get different sized filters, it is like the others say...  you cannot wash the bits out of the filter, they just get pushed through with the next fruit or veg...  then that one gets stuck in the holes!!!   Like Poolfield says, a tall whizzer thing and a normal sieve is far better... and why waste the 'bits'...  how can sieved fruit or veg be healthier than the whole fruit/veg????

Hi

I use my smoothie maker, just boil the veggies till soft, allow to cool and then blits in the smoothie maker.

I don't know what make - probably a kenwood or simular.

Basically its a glass jug sat ontop of a base with a blade inside and a plastic lid.

Use it to make soups, blended baby food etc...

Cheese makes everything better.

I have a Kenwood juicer and I use it plenty!

I'm really into juicing, especially green juices as I am a novice to the raw food path.

With regards the pulp left over, it can be frozen till needed then added to stews and casseroles; shame to waste all that fibre and goodness - or even given to guinea pigs, rabbits etc or chickens or on the compost heap as a last resort.

Anyone with a dehydrator (I'm looking for a cheapo one) can turn the pulp into dehydrated crackers.

"Kenwood juicer"
Have you tried it on blended blackberries and raspberries ?  Does it produce a lot of pulp, or take out just the pips?
