Gooseberries - what do you do with them please?
« on: May 17, 2007, 10:22 »
I've never eaten gooseberries. There are 4 bushes on the plot that we took on this year and they are covered in fruit.

I have no idea what to do with them when they are ready so all suggestions gratefully received.

I had a look on the BBC recipe site and it only had a couple of things. Gooseberry fool or using them as an accompaniment to meat (which wasn't much use to me being a veggie - nevermind)

Rhubarb & Gooseberry Wine. Freeze 4lbs of rhubarb until you've got got a couple of pounds of gooseberries spare.

I have quite a lot of gooseberries too - they're not quite ready yet but won't be long. Fortunately I like gooseberry crumble and pie so I can't wait.

The other night I saw James Martin on telly making Gooseberry Chutney which looked very nice so I might try that too - the recipe is uktvfood.co.uk.

Incidentally I have the usual green ones and the reddish ones too - is the taste the same?

I find the red ones more sweet than the green of course, that could just be my taste.

Thanks for that.
