soft pickled onions - advice please

Have followed the recipe to the letter regarding pickled onions. (as  I did last year and it was absolutely fine)
 Now just coming to pack the shallots in pickling vinegar - but they are quite soft, which is a disappointment.
These are my own grown shallots and not sure whether to dump them and go and buy some from the greengrocer.

Any thoughts on what's gone wrong!

Can't help with advice about the shallots but can you tell me which recipe you used and how sucessful it was as it is my first attempt at pickling?
40 hens, 8 cockerels, 3 dogs, 2 rabbits, 8 chinchillas, 2 teenage daughters and O/H

They should be soft at this stage.  When they go into the vinegar they will absorb it and become crisp again :D

Used the one from the recipe pages  - look at the headings - - its really easy.and was successful last year .  Just been to the greengrocer and he says he has send several deliveries of shallots back because they were all soft, so this might be a problem this year
