Someone on here was recently asking about the little plastic mesh disks which you can buy to hold pickled stuff below the surface of the vinegar.

How about this for some frugal cheating ... cut two or more strips out of a disposable plastic dish (I used the lid of a container as used by many Thai/Asian takeaways).

Make the strip about 0.5" wide and about 30% longer than the diameter of your screw-top jar.   Place the strips inside the edges of the lid so that they form a curved surface which will do the job nicely when you screw on the lid.
