young cock attacking fully grown hen and losing
« on: November 30, 2008, 18:15 »
hi folks

i have a pekin bantum cock who is about 4 months old and very tame who lives in doors at the moment, we have brought him a coop to go outside but we thought it would be too cold on his own so we decided to buy a fully grown hen to keep him warm. when we introduced them they automatically started to fight the hen doesnt seem intrested in a fight but the young male keeps running back to get put on his back or grabbed round the neck! we was told to keep pulling them apart and they would stop. but he keeps going in and getting hurt bleeding slightly!!! so i have put her out in the run (which shes very happy with) and him in his cage.

how can i stop this? please help

   thats not unusual! Probably the little lad trying it on...but as the hen is older she will at the moment be more dominant. Just give it time and I am sure they will be like an old married couple before too long! :D

I think I'd put the hen in the cage and the rooster in the run, otherwise when you reintroduce them in the run it would be more her territory than his making him even more of an underdog.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

thanks guys!!! you was right they are like a married couple now... they dont like being apart lol, i kept the young male in a smaller cage and let the hen have full run for a couple of days and now they are fine!!!

and now the hen has produced her first perfect egg for us :-)

thanks again for your help
