broken foot/leg
« on: November 17, 2008, 21:47 »
i'm pretty sure one of my birds has a broken foot, she's not walking on it and the foot is floppy and doesn't grip. it's not swollen though. i've put a splint on and will give her some tlc and i have a syringe to shoot some food down her beak.  i've left her in with the others for now. is there anything else i should do?

The dreaded and oft repeated phrase " It could be Mareks " comes to mind I'm afraid Upert. You'll have to see how it progresses. The Americans know it as ' Range Paralysis"

it sprung a rat trap as my allotment neighbour let them into the wrong run. there was a chunk out of the leg near the ankle. the leg was poked and prodded and a broken leg was the diagnosis from 'a bloke' ie non vet.

We also call it Mareks but as everyone else hope and pray that it is something else. That is one nasty disease.
Upert you might try building a splint out of pipe cleaners that will help keep it immobile till it heals. Use the paper tape like for bandages to keep it on.

it has a splint but is it better to pop the bird in a sling and let it dangle or should i continue to let it hop about awkwardly?

Do know upert.

Kate (and her Ducks) may have used some for her Drake that was injured by a fox.  Why don't you PM her.

Really seems that a sling would be better as she would not try to use it for balance and re-injure it.
