Merry Tiller 130202 engine type 0460 Briggs and Stratton Threads

Acquired this tiller and am finding some issues.

The pulley is missing 4 of the retaining pieces (referred to as Bumper Starter Pulley Part Number 68848) and screws  (93254) on parts list here https://help.gardentractorspares.co.uk/help/bes/st3/130200-0010.pdf?_ga=2.11724028.998931860.1696241775-2007476238.1696241775 Attached.

These parts seem to be rare and-or expensive. I can make the bits but it would help to know if these engines are meant to be unf threaded? The threads as they are have had metric screws forced into some of them but it all looks repairable.

You may know a source of less expensive spares than imported American ones or back-order and v expensive British ones.

The screws are probably ANC (UNC) B & S seemed to use ANC a lot. The bumpers are some sort of slightly flexible plastic , probably nylon. They were not used on all 130202 engines as many had steel pulley housings, on these tabs stuck out, which were bent over to keep the pulley in place. Extra tabs were fitted as you had to bend them back to remove the pulley, and they sometimes break off. Used engine parts often pop up on eBay but only 100200 and 130200 series used that sized fan cowl assembly.

The engine I have has steel bumpers rather than plastic ones. They look as if they are designed to be removed rather than bent back.

There is very little plastic at all. FYI, the full engine number is 130202-0460-01  73120307 which puts the age of the engine as from 1973 December the 3rd I believe.

Well I reckon the threads were UNF although all four bumpers had had screws forced in and so were a bit of a mess. I reckon that the tip of those screws is around 36.I have threaded them with M5-0.8  (Coarse Metric) which is big enough for me to drill out the mess before tapping a new thread. I have ordered some decent screws to use.

I think that the plastic ones will be fine. The starter pulley is steel but the housing is a pressed alloy casting so far as I can tell. Not sure what is meant by "steel pulley housing". I have emailed some parts suppliers to get an opinion but I can always make some of the bumpers in mild steel which is what I reckon the steel is


Whilst I am about it, I found the flywheel key was sheared which probably explains the lack of starting anyway.

The key is aluminium so it shouldn't do too much damage if it shears. Use the proper key, either genuine or non genuine, they are cheap enough. If there is any damage to the tapers, put some valve grinding paste on them and grind the two tapers together (as with a valve) until both are that uniform grey when the paste is cleaned off. Otherwise I find the key will shear again, even if the one way clutch is torqued up correctly.
