New allotment
« on: April 05, 2020, 15:25 »
Hi I love your website. I joined yesterday and am overwhelmed with all the support everyone gives. I have a spare 5x7 metre plot in my garden that I want to dedicate to an allotment. I also have a different area for a shed and I am getting an 8x10 greenhouse in another part if the garden. What I'm struggling with is how to set it out.The plot is on a slight hill with the hill running west. I have access to railway sleepers and want to make raised beds. But u read some foods like potatoes want to be in the ground?Do you know of any website or images of a lay out that might suit me,We want to grow: potatoes, leeks, carrots, runner beans, herbs, raspberries, onions, garlic, parsnips, sweetcorn, asparagus, turnips, blue berries. Any help or push in the right direction is hugely appreciated. Oh and I plan to have my paths as chippings with fabric

I use the no dig approach, I find this method cuts down dramatically on weeding plus the plants seem to have docket fuel under them. Sourcing large quantities of good quality rotted mulch can be a problem initially for the first year, but after that you need only a light covering every year.
I wish I’d started using this approach 40 years ago !
