Norlett rotavator
« on: December 11, 2007, 14:07 »
HI,
I am new to this forum, and I wonder if anyone can offer me some advise please.
I have recently acquired an old Norlett Beaver Powaspade rotavator with a Briggs and Stratton 3HP engine I have an instruction manual for operating the machine, but I don't have any information regarding the engine.

I understand that a seperate booklet was available for the engine but I don't have this.

Can anyone advise me please what is the recommended spark plug and plug gap?

Do I need to use 4 star  petrol or unleaded ?

What is the correct procedure for starting the engine?

and finally does anyone know where I may be able to acquire an engine booklet?

regards Trevor.

Just had to say welcome, Trevor, especially to the Leicestershire contingent.

Sorry, I know diddly about rotovators, but we do have some resident experts, so hang on in there.

I take it you've looked at this site....

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have a Briggs & Stratton 3hp engine made around 1966, it runs on regular unleaded (octane 87)

Hi,
For the engine booklet you could try a google search with the engines model, type and code numbers.
you will find these stamped on the engine cowling near the spark plug.
Off the top of my head, the spark plug gap would be about 25 thou,( how it comes out of the carton)
unleaded petrol
To start the engine you must first pull out the choke. on your engine, I assume that the carb sit's on top of the petrol tank. If that's so, at the back of the carb (pointing towards the operator, normally) you will find the choke lever which will, I think pull out towards you.
pull the recoil starter rope untill the engine fires, then push the choke in and give the recoil another pull. The engine will normally start.
as for the spark plug type, I would use a NGK BM6A which, if memory serves, is the equivilent of a champion CJ8
I hope that is of some use to you.
all the best
