How are your Onions and Spuds
« on: February 01, 2011, 19:48 »
My stored Onions and Tatties have been great throughout the winter, but the past few days I have noticed some of my Onions seem to be showing signs of wear and my Tatties are not as good as they were a month ago, but still perfectly edible.

How about your stock is it holding up
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I lost my Spuds about a month ago! My own fault, I'd left them them in an unheated shed and the frost got them. Likewise my Onions have not faired much better with many showing signs of rot in the form of a white mould.

I only grow first and second early tatties and they ran out early November.

We are now down to our last large onion but at least it looks healthy. Already have plans to grow more this year.

My spuds are doing really fine, I keep them in an unheated garage and have an ex farmhand mate who has a quantity of original tatty sacks. These sacks are very good because they will stand 3 degrees of frost.being multi layered and all. As for the onions,I never had much success keeping them hung in the garage until I saw where my mate kept his. He has them in a 3 tier basket with a board on top to keep them dry and leaves them out in all weathers on his plot.I did the same last back end and have had no problems whatsoever.

Onions ran out just after Christmas - pretty pleased that they lasted so long as they were over wintering types which aren't supposed to store well. The ones that I strung up in the kitchen lasted longest - the ones in the shed didn't do nearly as well - some went soft and others sprouted.

Spuds - still using Picasso, even though they're riddled with wireworm holes. I've still got some King Edwards too but they're starting to sprout.
