My Kitchen Floor - Update
« on: July 05, 2021, 13:20 »
Todays the day, for the beginning of the new floor covering.  Concrete floor (where the leaking pipe was) to be skimmed.   So New kitchen floor for me today  -  except, when they took up the lino on the original wooden floor all the plywood was black and wet.  I burst into tears.  All too much.  Anyway We arranged my lovely Plumber, who will call in on his way home or in the morning on his way out.  So a chunk of ply and floor boards to cut out.  It seems to me it is where the pipes run from the tank to the sink.  But there is a big cooker cable runs very close.   I now have to ring the flooring shop when the plumber fixes the leak, and then the flooring boys will return, make that cut out piece of flooring good, and then see how wet it is.  They can neither skim or lay the flooring until it dries out.  Oh dear, oh dear,  It has taken 8 months to get this far.  I was so excited.

Oh what a disappointment! Hope it all goes smoothly from now on  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It is far worse than I could have imagined.  A new Insurance Claim, the water has completely rotted the wood floor.  I have two big holes where the plumber took some flooring out, the void underneath is full of water and the smell is horrid.  There are two big gardening buckets covering the holes to stop me falling in them.
The Loss Adjustor is coming on Thursday morning.   It looks like a complete new floor.   I cannot type anymore, but I will keep you updated.  Mrs B

Oh dear Mrs B what a blow & drama for you, but looking on the bright side at least it has been found before you came to some harm & when it is all sorted it will be all new, clean, no nasty smell & I’m sure very lovely , hugs to you

It must have been going on for a long time to have rotted all those lovely old floor board they are almost 1 inch thick.    Still, as you say no harm done to me except mentally and physically
Nice to have people I know (from the previous claim) to sort the claim, but can you imagine what my insurance will cost next year. I also have to pay another £250 for the first part of the claim.        As long as I don't fall down the holes I shall be ok  -  for now. ::)  Mrs B

Best to make sure it all dry and sound before covering things back up, did your plumber find the source of the leak and has sorted it? Floors and ceilings are over rated anyway  :nowink:

Oh so sorry to hear this Mrs B. Hopefully it will all get sorted out with the insurance quickly, and that the house will dry out easily in the summer weather

Ohhh, Mrs B!!!  Some people sail through life with nary a problem, and some of us are destined for everything that can go wrong doing just that!   It seems to be one thing after another for you at the moment, doesn't it?  I think that one thing at a time is ok to cope with, but one thing on top of another sometimes gets a bit much. At least the problem has been found, and once duly sorted out you will be able to enjoy your home once again with no more worries.  For now - there is nothing you can do to change anything, so...............arm yourself with a nice bottle of wine, or whatever your tipple is, some lovely bath salts, oils or whatever you use, a couple of scented candles and something nice to nibble on. Then............switch off your phone and pamper yourself for an hour or two before tucking yourself up for the night.  Hopefully tomorrow things will seem a bit brighter.  Knowing your luck, though, just be VERY careful with the candles!!!  Chin up.

That's very unlucky. One consolation is that replacing the floor covering has exposed the water problem so that can now be tackled. It is probably better in the long term to find leaks accidentally and fix them than live in blissful ignorance whilst the water damage increases with time.

An update on the update !.   The plumber mended the broken water pipe.   The 1ft of water under the floorboards has gone.    Some Disaster Specialists have been 1 week ago.  They spent a day, taking up "two layers of ply".  Then banging down the nails (which still catch me).   They put one big drier under the floor and covered all the exposed area with ply with a hole cut in it the same size as the machinery pipe outlet.  There is a second hole where cables come out to my sockets.   The second drier is in the middle of my kitchen floor as there was not enough room under the floor.  This all stays in place until 26th July, when they come back to check.  It all runs day and night.  The noise and heat in the kitchen is really heavy.  I cannot wear my hearing aids because of th noise.  So far it doesn't seem any different, the floor boads that are exposed are still black and wet.   I am trying to work round ll this stuff.   Thy are going to have my beautiful Axminster Persian Carpet professionally cleaned because of all the dirty walkthrough.    I have got a large bath mat at the doorway, but have to move it when I need to get to certain cupboard.   I m so weary.
I think I shall say I need a builders clean in the kitchen dust etc, going everywhere.  Mrs Bouquet

Mrs B. You have my sincere sympathy. I know it's only a tiny consolation but we will be having all the plaster removed from the fireplace wall as the previous coal fire made the salts in the brick come through the plaster and caused a bit of dampness. As you say, it's the thought of all the dust getting everywhere so I'll be investing in some plastic sheeting to cover as much as I can including the cats!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Mrs B, I think I’d have been asking to be housed elsewhere during all this upheaval!

Snowdrops, I did think of that and I am sure they would have agreed.   But 70 containers to water etc.   It is as much upheaval to go elsewhere as stay put really.    Mrs.  B

Ok, so far.  The man came today with his damp testers,  and all the floorboards and the joists under were well below the magic number 16.   Hurrah, the noisy driers have gone.    Apparently, so the Loss Adjuster tells me, another man from a large builders firm will contact me today to arrange to put down all the new ply and sort out the plinths.   Another noisy couple of days for that job.    But hey, I don't care anymore.   I shall let you know more when it happens !!  Mrs Bouquet
