i have dug up a dahlia from last year (bishop of aukland) i think, can i seperate the tubers to make seperate plants or is there a special method of propagation?

You usually start them into growth and take cuttings from the new shoots :)

If you are going to split the Dahlia each separate tuber MUST have a piece of flower stem, other wise it wont succeed. You are better off as Lesley says, start them into growth then take cuttings. :D

read some where if the tuber has an eye it can be separated is this true?

That's what we do, and we get loads ;)

We've had surprisingly good plants from bits left in the ground and from splitting large tubers, never had enough room in the greenhouse to take loads of cuttings. Started leaving the tubers in the ground three years ago but don't know if they will have survived this winter.
