Green French Beans
« on: January 20, 2021, 16:46 »
I fancy some in a large pot this year.  Can you please recommend a tasty good cropper.   I would like them to grow no more 24 to 30 inches.   Thanks,   Mrs Bouquet

Have a look for dwarf French beans on D T Brown's website for Mascotte and the purple one as both are said to be very tasty and compact.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Best dwarf beans I've tried over the years are Purple Queen.
Very reliable, harvest from may till October, grow well in pots and are great croppers.
Do need a few small stakes about 18 inches high to keep them in check and bush nicely.
They turn green once cooked.

Been saving my own saved seed of them for years and they never fail.

I have over the years off and on grown Purple Queen, belting bean.

I was really impressed with yellow wax horn last year. Picked up the seed in Lidl and they gave a much tastier crop than the green varieties I grew. Very easy to pick as they go more yellow when they are ready.

Purple Queen are excellent, easy to spot in the foilage if you plant them too close together!  Grew 'Faraday' last year and they were good, possibly beating Queen for flavour.

Just be warned Mrs B - the purple ones are excellent in a pot and look pretty but they do turn back to green when cooked.  So you get looks in the tub but normal green on your plate.

Another I have grown for a few years and now using my saved seed is Sonesta.
Thanks to a seed parcel on here some years ago.
They crop well (not as well as a Purple Queen type) and thin 3 inch long beans.
Have found to get a good crop do find you need to sow regular sowings every few weeks during May/June, as the plants bean crop are short lived producing during July to September.
They are yellow and very tasty.
