fruit tree branches rubbing on wires.
« on: June 14, 2015, 12:57 »
right i've finally got my rear end in gear last week and put up post and wires for my fruit tree's (apple, pear, cherry, plum, apricot and peach). i'm planning to train them all in fans, i've started to roughly tie the branches in and going to wait for the foliage to dies back before tying canes into a fan shape and tying the branches into the canes (hope this is right, most research i've done says this is a good method).

so my question is should i put something between the branches and wires/ canes to stop them rubbing with the wind?

I don't know for sure; how thick is the wire?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Use Haxnicks Soft-Tie where the branches cross the wires

it's the wire that they use to keep chain link fence tight, i would guess about 4mm thick so not exactly thin.

i'm just thinking that i won't want to tie it to the wires or canes too tight that the ties cut into the branches. but i guess it's not ideal to have the ties that loose so that when the branches move with the wind it causes them to rub and damage the bark.

them ties look good. would it be advisable to tie them in a figure of 8 so the branches don't actually come in contact with the wires?

does the materials of the ties do any damage to the bark, and does it allow the moisture to escape?

or am i just thinking far too much about it. lol

I have used it for my soft fruit (and roses on wires) and tie a figure of 8, with no damage.

excellent, that looks like the answer.

i must say i'm a little surprised how reasonably priced it, most things like that seem to cost the earth.
