My girls have em and so I bought some stuff called Duramite but its not worked - that was for the chook house. Got an aerosol for the girls and sprayed them when I did the hen house.
Anyway the little critters are still there so tomorrow going to get some Poultry Shield or any of the other stuff thats suggested on Red Mite.
What I want to know is : Can the little critters live in our homes - I assume that they can , so what do I treat my home with :?:
Also will washing my clothes get rid of em - I personally must be the cleanest person around as had umteen showers too - I hate crawlies :evil:
Goodness knows what the poor chooks are going through with them crawling about the chook house.
Also would I be able to spray the old apple tree which is in the chooks large pen - for red mite :?: :?:

Hi Rose, just going to shower too! As I had to clean out the layer's house today, but luckily the chicks house hasn't got it as that one was creosoted last year!
I cleaned it all out with Jeyes, then when it had dried a bit I sprayed it all over with poultryshield. And the little red devils were even in the metal and plastic posh rollaway nest boxes I treated us to last year! Then Brian gave the outside a tiny bit of creosote to kill the worst area, but inside it only smells of poultryshield and red mite powder which I dusted over the hens and the new shavings. Will poultryshield again Tuesday, as PS doesn't work straight away, it takes 2 days.
A friend was told to use duramitex, but mix it with 5 litres of water instead of suggested 50 litres and he reckoned it killed his red mites instantly!

Sorry to hijack this thread a little but has anyone with ducks ever had a problem with red mites. They are not really mentioned much in my book and have never seen hide nor hair of them with mine. Don't dust or anything for them. Have I just been lucky (so far, touch wood) or do they not really bother ducks?

I honestly don't know if its just a chicken thing, but I know wild brids can carry them around and deposit the little blighters on top of chicken houses. Perhaps they don't like the taste of duck???
Oh forgot to mention YR,Water drowns the mites, so your clothes are fine in the washing machine, and although they can live up to 38 weeks without a host body, once we have showered and washed our clothes, we don't seem to get anymore probs with them in the house. Strange eh???

I don't think they trouble ducks, just chickens and turkeys
(and their keepers :wink: )

It really is the nightmare scenario for every poultry keeper. I check every day for them but so far, so good. More luck than judgement. :?

Yesterday we found a couple of red mites under one of the battery chook's wings.
So today, before going to the shop to get the red mite stuff we decided to thoroughly check out the house incase there was any lurking in the nooks and crannies.
So we lifted the roof off and 3 out of 8 of the supporting bars were CRAWLING in red mite :cry:
Those poor chooks! I feel like SUCH a bad owner :cry:
We squished those that were visible (very satisfying i must say) and alan's just off to the shop now to get some virkon-s and red mite powder. Not going to do it until tomorrow though, as the virkon needs a while to dry.
I feel absolutely awful! Those poor chooks! Hopefully they'll feel better in a couple of nights' time!!!

They are host specific, so you and the house will be OK.

Whistler I am glad someone else uses milbenex! I swear it the best stuff! Bowden and Knight are also really helpful, I have never had a problem since using it.

Is Milbenex a liquid and does it come in larger sizes????

comes in a 1000ml bottle and 100ml does a 5L pressure sprayer thingy.Have not seen any mites Grannie in my large sheds -despite my new broody house being infected! I hadn't sprayed as thought didn't need too. So I think it must have a residual action. Brilliant stuff have been using for about 18mths without any probs. :lol:

I have to say I have unfortunately had my first dosage of the little * this year, and in real force too. I have been a bit lax this year and not quarantined new birds from 'other' sources as vigilently as I should have - live and learn!
I found Duramitex (more concentrated than suggested), around pens, then Jeyes (v strong too) regularly and liberally spread lime around cracks and corners etc. The lime was like £3 for 25Kg, so cheap and effective. Have also got some diatomacious (sp?) earth that I got from Solway Feeders, I shake this around nest boxes and give birds a blast with it. Also spray the birds directly with pigeon type bug spray.
Don't these red mite cost a bomb!
