Like greenfly but red?
« on: May 24, 2012, 20:28 »
I've had some aphids appear on my iceburg lettuce in the greenhouse.  >:(
They are like greenfly but redish (redfly?  ???).
Any ideas on what they are called and how to get rid of them?
I'm worried that when I hoik out the lettuces to put my toms/peppers/aubs in, they might become infested too.  :(

How big are they?  Are they the same size a aphids?  If they are smaller they could be red spider mites.  If they are you may need one of the special sprays if you are into that.

ive had them too, look the same as aphid but red. they where in my greenhouse so i rounded up a load of ladybirds from the plot and put them in the greenhouse a few weeks later a lots of lovely ladybird lavae (i think they eat their own weight in aphids every day) and no red aphids left

Deffo aphids Auntie.  :(
Only seem to be on my iceberg, not the black seeded simpson from last year.
Just found out you can get 'lettuce aphids' which can be pink in colour, so I guess that's them.
Will give them a wipe with some soapy water and see it that helps.  Hopefully they won't be interested in toms etc.
May also have a bit of a ladybird hunt when I go to mums this weekend, she has loads.  Thanks for the tip Catweazle.  :)

They must have been out in the sun too long and have sunburn. Treat them the same as you would ordinary ones.
