Onion Sets
« on: March 21, 2010, 17:30 »
Hi

Can anybody give me some advice as to what the best way to plant onion sets is please? I have been given some but they didn't come with instructions. My grandma told me to leave them out until they sprout and then plant them. Just wanted to check this was the best way because they have been out for a week and nothing has happened at all so far!

Thanks!!

Sorry, should just clarify - I'm hoping to grow these in pots as I don't have a garden only a balcony!

Many thanks

I've never heard of that advice.......it sounds more like the method used to 'chit'  or sprout potatoes before you plant them

Just plant them up to their necks and they will soon start to grow away :)

Just make sure you protect them from birds until they have established, birds like to pull them out  ::)

And mice/rats Lucy, I planted some out and covered with a large homemade cloche, looking at them today some have been uprooted and tossed aside (don't think they really like onions but they could at least put them back where they came from) sneeky devils :)

Though if you keep an eye on them every few days, easy enough to pop them back in  :)

Mice and rats won't be a problem - I'm ten floors up! Birds might be though - not sure how I'd go about protecting my plants from them? I hadn't thought of that...

A bit of net draped over a few bamboo canes would serve you well with the pesky birds.

I do sometimes forget how high up I am! Yesterday I spilt some sugar on the floor and started to worry about ants!! If there were ants that determined they'd climb 10 floors up, I'd let them have it!
