Hi, I am trying to find out what this plant is. I have scoured the RHS website, but cannot seem to find it there. Probably staring  me in the face.    Hubby thinks it is a weed, but I am totally flummoxed, so any help and advice would be appreciated.

+1, looks like it.  Solidago sp. - several species to choose between, but the genus should allow better searching for identification features.

Thankyou so much, I had looked at this previously or something similar but discounted it because it said maximum growth 60cm, but this is over 5ft high!. But now you have given me the name, some of the species do grow that high, Yay, very pleased and thank you both so much.

I do have another plant that is confusing me, actually all my plants are as we came into a garden that is beautifully planted but with no names of anything anywhere, and we have no knowledge of them, and new ones seem to appear all the time.

I will post the photo of the other one too if I may.

Golden rod! It's a right thug int it.  I hate the damn things

It is a thug because it spreads by root and seed very efficiently! I'm pulling baby plants from between the patio slabs and digging back roots every year to keep it in a nice big clump. It also needs supporting (mine is about 4/5 foot)
However, the flowers are cheerful and different and the insects love them and the finches like the seed so I'm keeping it!
