Sadistic pleasure
« on: July 17, 2009, 09:31 »
Last winter I bought some butterfly proof netting to cover my Brassicas.
Yesterday I had a pleasant hour sat in the sun with a cold drink, watching the cabbage whites unsuccessfully fly themselfs to exhaustion trying to find a way in.
Non gardeners just would'nt understand.  :D
Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

You're lucky.  I get the little blighters stuck inside, however carefully I think I've fitted the netting.  But however easily it got in, it's a nightmare to get it out again without wrecking the whole structure.  Gets me all hot & bothered

I used to like seeing butterflies flitting about before I got the allotment.
Now I go into a blind panic if I have the nets raised for weeding etc, and I spot one.  >:(

I gave up trying to put my netting down... every morning there are more holes in my cabbages.

Isn't it funny how your view of butterfly's and bee's change??

Before i was a gardener i used to go mad if i saw a bee and i used to love watching all the flutterby's flitting about.

Now i get all excited when i see the bee's buzzing about my plants and have a fit about my cabbages when ever i see a butterfly.

If you read the postings over the last 6 months I cannot think of anything that someone on this site has not wanted to see exterminated.

Just about every animal and bug I can think of, most plants as well.

Just a reminder folks - not all butterflies are bad, only one of the white family, the cabbage white (unsurprisingly).  I used to rent a house from a farmer who was completely convinced that all butterflies were the spawn of the devil, no matter how many times I told him the pretty ones lay their eggs on nettles & thistles he still thought they were all cabbage eaters   Sadly most of our pretty "common" butterflies are becoming endangered species  :(
