Lawn Cuttings?
« on: August 07, 2012, 21:55 »
Hello all,
I have been told that lawn cuttings are a big no no for chickens, and therefore i was wondering if anyone can tell me why this is? When enquiring I have also learnt that the same applies for horses, but still don't know why???

I don't know why for horses but chickens it can cause impacted crop ... The grass also deteriorates when cut ... Chickens only pick of the top tips of grass but when giving cuttings they are too long ... They may also have grease and oil on which is not gonna do chooks any good ... I am sure that someone knows more than me and may explain more x

Agree with yacks, long grass can cause impacted crop and grass cuttings go mouldy very quickly.

if it is short clippings then you should be ok so long as they are very fresh. Just remember to sweep up any left after 30 minutes.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Grass starts to break down very very quickly and it heats up creating changes in the grass. As Joyfull says remove after 30 minutes maximum. It really can happen that quickly and will make any animal very poorly with a real possibility of death. :(
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

It's the same with horses. They don't chew the cud so it ferments in their bellies and causes colic which can kill. Never ,ever, ever give cuttings to horses. Just think how it heats up in the compost bin!
