Thermometer bubble
« on: June 27, 2011, 20:03 »
Does anybody know a quick way of getting rid of a bubble in the tube of a max/min thermometer? There's one just beneath the little metal bar on the 'max' side, which is stopping us being able to reset it.

Have tried tapping it, but that didn't work.

If you can hold your nerve.  .   .   .   try shaking it furiously in a radial motion holding the top bit (the other end to the mercury bubble).  Next, stick it in the freezer overnight.     Cheers,   Tony.

totally agree - a good violent swing should do it, with a flick of the wrist for added oomph! Just be sure not to let go (don't do it in the greenhouse  )

Thanks.

It looks as if I've got to be a bit more assertive with the bubble.  ::)

I'll let you know how I get on.

It's a very small bubble, almost at the top of the tube now so it doesn't interfere with the little bit of metal (thanks everybody for your help). It's probably a bit too small for your spirit level though.

Maybe your local hardware shop will have one you can buy.  ::)

Pleased to say that the bubble is now gone. It took a couple of nights in the freezer and a couple of warm water baths as well as a good few flick/shakes. Holding down the button seemed to help a lot.

Thanks.  :)

Holding down the button releases the air pressure in the tube  :D

Glad it it's fixed
