I've just come across some old kitchen units which are made from the old sort of chipboard. The laminate has dropped off and whats left just crumbles to a fine powder. They are years old and really well rotted. Would it be any good to dig in to aid water retention. It looks as though it would do the job nicely?

I would not personally because of the glue used to make the chipboard.

They really are well rotted and I hate throwing anything away that might have some use. I would imagine that any glue would have lost any toxicity by now, but I do see your point.
