They're back!
« on: May 02, 2019, 10:57 »
All the way from South Africa to our old stable block. Several pairs of swallows arrived this morning, a week later than normal. They're twittering around last year's old nests and freshening them up for as yet to  be born new families.
Silly I know but I've got this mental image of them twittering en-route across Africa and then Europe about what to expect when they finally arrive in this little rural corner of North Cumbria

Aw, that is good, I bet you were anxious.  About the in-flight twittering -  if I flew that far, I would be drawing every breath I could get.      But it is a nice image to have, I hope they were pleased when they arrived.   I now have an image of one nudging the other and saying "told you so".   Mrs Bouquet

Birds in cages do not sing  -  They are crying.

Last Sunday when OH and I were out in the goose pen mending some broken fencing I saw several swallows flitting around which was magic, then we heard a buzzard, chiff-chaff's and skylarks. I have no idea why this year we seem to have seen and heard more wildlife. Maybe "It's a Kind of Magic" blessing we've got this year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I've seldom seen so many bees either. Several people have said the same. All types. Regarding the summer migrants of swallows and chief chaff the weather the last few weeks has been very favourable. This time last year was the beast from the east.

Well, the bad news is that the swallows that arrived a couple of weeks ago were not "our" swallows. They were in transit and haven't been seen since. If no more arrive here, this will be the first swallow-less summer since we bought this house 37 years ago

Ah, what a shame,  maybe your swallows saw new residents and so went nearby, hope so.  Mrs Bouquet
