Can I move established leeks?
« on: April 24, 2010, 18:03 »
Hi there, I grew some leeks last year (they are not so big but healthy!) Can I move them to another part of my raised bed as I would like to plant something else where they are.  Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Maria

I did the very same thing a few weeks ago without any problems.
Dont leave them in too long though as they may go to seed.

You can dig them all up, and put them all together and heel them in somewhere until you are ready to eat them.

Some might go to seed, once the first one does; dig the lot up, clean and chop them and freeze them for soups.....once the flowers form they are only really good for soups.

I often leave the last ones to flower and put them into a large pot for the display - or if they are heritage ones, they get saved for seed for the next year. Leeks are a bit difficult to get seed from but if we get a decent summer, it is just about manageable.

Just like all alliums; it throws up a flower stalk, flowers and then will produce seeds if left long enough.

Leeks. Why do you plant them in seed bed and then move them?
