Espalier Stella cherry.
« on: May 09, 2020, 20:23 »
Searching the interweb for information about summer pruning cherry espalier and I keep coming up with the statement :

"Plums, cherries, apricots, peaches, and nectarines are not suitable for espalier-training, but do very well when trained as fans".  They always fail to tell you why.  I'm getting what I take to be a decent crop from such a tree.

Do any of you knowledgeable persons know why?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I've always understood that it is just because the wood on stone fruit trees is more brittle than that of apples and pears and so a fan is easier to form and maintain.  You obviously have a knack with trained fruit trees and are getting round any potential issues.

If an espalier works for you and you are getting a decent crop, then go your own way  :)
