your thoughts on growing your own
« on: February 16, 2009, 14:01 »
Im doing a project for my degree to promote growing your own fruit and vegetables and would really appreciate know your views on it.

I would be really grateful if you could choose three words/phrase out of the list below which you feel sums up why you grow your own.

Healthy
Rewarding
fun
satisfying
exciting
better than supermarket
cheaper
fresh
tasty
environmental reasons

If you have any other views growing your own fruit and vegetables which you feel would help to promote growing your own then please let me know.

Many thanks  :)

I would choose healthy (for the exercise rather than the amount of veg i (don't) get..., fun and tasty.

If you had an allotment and you use these boards, I would add sociable too.
and adding knowledge too - you'd be amazed how much info other gardeners can give you

I'd choose all, but if I have to narrow it down to 3 it's healthy, better than supermarket, and fresh! :)

I would have liked to say cheaper because my goal was always to grow my own to cut down on food bills - but if I was honest, it has been anything but that if I added up all the things I've been buying to successfully grow my own as well as store & preserve it.  Hopefully this should start working in my favour now that I'm more or less set up.

However, I would definitely lean towards fresh & tasty - you really can't get any fresher than eating it within the hour of picking.  As for better than supermarket  who in their right minds would pick up a cabbage from a supermarket shelf and watch a great big slug crawl out of a hole, and still be prepared to have it for the dinner table  :nowink:
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

It's all of the above to me too, but Satisfying, Fresh & Tasty would be my choices.

It's a way of life handed down from parents to children in my family. It's as normal in my family as going to school as a child, doing the housework and earning a living.

We grow vegetables and flowers. Others don't.

Satisfying, Cheaper and Fresh.

And anything that takes profit from the supers must be a good thing  :)

Also the environmental reasons are sound. As a crop, grass isn't really efficient so it's better used for something edible.

Good luck with the degree.

Whilst saving money is a goal, it's not the first thing that comes directly to my mind.
All of the points are relevant, but limited to three, I'd say:
Fresh,
Tasty,
and the last will have to go down as 'better than the supermarket', actually it's more convenient as the nearest supermarket that I can afford to shop at is 5 miles away, which in turn means that less goes to waste.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
