Veg growing on the cheap

I quite often see posts of how much people are spending on seeds, tools, the plots themselves etc

So I'm wondering just how cheap you could GYO for :?:

So far this year I've spent £40 on the plots themselves and £21.85 on 30 raspberry canes.

I think I've got most seeds covered, most are left overs from last year, and some that have been gifted to me  :D   might have to buy some runner and pea seeds and this year I'm buying onion sets as the last 2 years have been dismal for my seed grown ones.

So there's the challenge, how cheap can we go  :D

This will be my first serious year and I'm planning on doing it with £80. I'll buy most my things from wilkos (including seeds). They should be as good as any !

Nearly £20 on seeds, but that's everything covered and sure to be lots left over for next year.

Seed potato and onion sets on order from the lotty so cost to be confirmed but cheaper than buying from most shops.

£26 rent paid for the year.

Manure free (collecting first lot this weekend hopefully but the lady said it's good stuff and I can have as much as I can take, so I've blagged a free van for the weekend, payload approx 1.4t!!   )

Using said van to hopefully collect a free shed for the lotty too (although they haven't responded to my email yesterday, but I'm not going to panic yet)

Lots of timber to make some raised beds which I rescued form the tip, plus a free double glazed door to make a coldframe.

There's still a fair bit on my "needs" list, but still plenty of time to "acquire" them for next to nothing, although stuff like tomato feed is unlikely to be offered on Freecycle.

Now I've written it all down I'm feeling quite pleased with myself  :D

Think i going to be expensive this year being my first season.

Got seeds on order = £31

Seed potatoes will be an extra £12

Then i need compost, fertilizer, fleece, netting etc.

I've a feeling it's going to be well worth it though.  :D

I knew you were clever Richy, but you've saved seeds from NEXT YEAR????    That takes some doing!!!

Serious now!  I'll get a big bag of growing medium for my seeds, tried doing my own last year but wasn't too good.  And I buy onions sets as my onions seeds never do much and my 3 bags of seed potatoes.

Seedwise I've been very lucky, as DD sent me some peas, and John sent me some seeds to go with my book, and Aggy and mUnty sent me a lod, plus my saved tomato seeds from lst year, so all I need are parsnip seeds.  I've got everything else I want, oh apart from broad bean seeds !

So not bad!!!  I'm a lucky girl!!!

I grow on a smaller scale than a lotty, I have 7 beds that are 6m x 1.2m and 6 small ones in the polytunnel so I don't need huge quantities of anything. I do swaps with friends as well and John's free seeds with my book helped. So this year I have bought £15.00 of seed potaoes, onion sets and new shallots. I do buy 3large bags of multipurpose peat free compost, usually on offer buy 2 get 3rd free. Muck comes free from the farm across the road.

I'm creating a new bed this year as I've decided to add strawberries into my crop rotation but have runners from my own plants and I'm going to buy 3 blueberry bushes and make an "acid bed" where the strawberries were this year at about £30

Estimated total £60

£29 so far, plot and seeds, cut down a lot as many left overs and stuff saved.  Still got to get the seed potatoes though.

Think I've got some broad been seeds I was given Grannie Annie and I hate them so won't be using them in any of my precious limited space.

Can send them to you if you like. Just PM me and can let you know what they are if you are interested.

I got all of my seeds fron the garden centre whilst they were 50p a packet £11 in all (except parsnips which I will buy fresh)
need to get seed potatoes, Im going to try onions from seed
and will probably get some sacks of chicken manure as Im a bit wary of the other stuff.
Tomato food provided by my wormery for free
Wood for construction from freecycle and skip's

my only big expense this year will be some sort of mesh to keep off the pests

I bought some seeds so spent about £5.  I've still to get my seed potatoes and onion sets but I don't have a big garden and won't need very many.  My sister has a couple of ponies so there is a ready supply of manure.  I just have to dig to the bottom of the pile to get the more older stuff.  Last year I got my tomato food from the pound shop for £1 funnily enough.
