New cover for greenhouse
« on: October 06, 2008, 20:39 »
i have two walk-in greenhouses like this one:

the problem is i don't have the outer covers just the frames, but i do have a supply of rolls of clear plastic sheeting about 1.5M wide and mega long (pretty sturdy stuff).

Anyone got any ideas as to how i could secure the sheeting to the frames so they don't come off in the wind? or any other ideas i could make my greenhouse walls and roof out of on the cheap??

have come up with my own solution, am going to try treat this like a polytunnel and cover it in a massive piece of plastic or a tarp and bury the ends, then make some sort of door? any suggestions of where i can get a piece of plastic approx 7m x 6m (that's about 23ft  x 19.5ft in old money)

cheers  :D

with your original plastic you could join it with Gaffa / Duck tape to make a new cover

I've no idea if they would be the same but I did see replacement covers in my local Homebase recently.  Might be worth asking if you have one nearby.

I would have thought that cable ties spaced every few inches would do the job.

We have one just like this and the original cover is held on with velcro, which is itself sewn into the seams on the edges.  Ours is pretty much fallen apart now, especially after the summer we have just had.  I'm going to cover it with clear polythene for next year.  However, without that template your problem isn't so easily solved.  I think the polytunnel idea is good though!  Put a wanted on your local Freecycle for the polythene, that's what I'm intending to do anyway.

POLYTHENE COVERING
I use clothes pegs to fix fairly tough polythene to supports and to other pieces with some success.

If you plan to replace it after a year for thinner polythene, this usually works OK.   Thicker polythene lasts 2-3 years.   The greenhouse is almost as effective as using the approved material.

Shelving to hold trays makes good use of the height of the greenhouse.  Most greenhouses use little of the available space effectively.

I have seen replaceable covers for these in our local garden centre.  Shouldn't be too difficult to pick  up.

cheers guys, think im going to go with the polytunnel route, i have a massive roll of thick sheet plastic which should cover the whole thing, might use some of the proper hot spot tape you get with polytunnel kits, ill let everyone know how i get on  :D

Is the polythene you have Ultra Violet Inhibited?

If not it could go brittle within a year.

Got the stuff for my carrot fly fence from here. Next year will be it's 4th season & still going strong.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

cheers pete

I'm not sure i'd get one for it as what i have is two frames connected together so its not a standard size anymore, also my plot is quite windy so anchoring the cover in the ground would be a good idea so that when i come back in the mornin its still there!!!!
