I have a friend who has just hatched a load of sikie and polish chooks in a variety of colours and has offered me the opportunity to have some. Up until now i have had what i would class as fairly large birds - mainly for laying.

I was wondering what, if any, the differences were in keeping these varieties, would they live together when older. Come to that would they live happiliy with my other larger chooks in a large shed with outside run? If i have to keep them seperate then i have a 2 story rabbit hutch i could convert but that would limit how many i could have.

Any adivice about these birds would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

I am sure Babe will be along in a min with fab advice. I have Silkies and Polands, and they are kept in a very large pen and coop together. All my bigger chooks are seperate which is why I cant answer. Other than living accom. looking after them is the same. They are very tame  I love em, big time and want some more Polands in different colours but dont know if I will be able to get them here :(
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

they arent very good at it, but they can do it, thankfully.

but silkies.....5ft is going to be a bit of a big jump to bed. :D

My silkies sometime use their ladder but also are very happy to nest on the ground
Oh and if you get black crested Polands you "have" to give fertilised eggies to Babe so she can bring em to me, ITS THE LAW

    I have a white crested black Poland and when we first got her she flew over a eight foot hedge and up as high as our neighbours roof line.  She promptly collided with the brick wall and landed back in the neighbours driveway probably with a bit of a headache but that was a couple of years ago now and she doent attempt to fly now and is none the worse for her adventure.

My Polish and silkie live with araucana, pekin and another girl the only thing I would keep a watch for is someone pecking the Polands "hair"  I have one very small bantam she is actually a pekin cross Poland and she takes great pleasure in pecking at the other Polands crest hence the reason they are separated.  Otherwise I would say go for it silkies and Polands are fab.  :D

My silkie can manage a jump of around 18" - 2', and really doesn't like heights.  Even when put on a surface 3-4' heigh she'll peer over edge looking nervous and "bock bock bock, not very happilly"  My perch (well chickens really not mine) is around 12", she's happy with that.
