Seed Potatoes Arrive
« on: January 19, 2021, 00:05 »
A big day in my gardening year with the arrival of the seed potatoes. I’ve really gone for it this year, looking for variety and self sufficiency.

Mine are here as well, but a more modest selection.

I have a bad case of seed spud envy now

I popped into our GC today, and the first thing the lovely lady said was, 'Are you after seed potatoes, as they're going out as soon as we get them'!

I really won't be growing them after the sadness of the spud bags, where they just sulked, then gave up! As spuds are so cheap nowadays, and we don't really use a whole lot at a time, I'd rather use the ground for something more exotic!

Had we still got The Patch, we'd have bought enough for a small country! I even bought a spud digging attachment for the Mantis for that reason, but it wasn't all that fantastic really, so I use it for weeding in the spring!

as I said in a previous topic we bought all our seed potatoes for this season except for a few pink fir apple and like John we grow our potatoes for self sufficiency

our relations and friends usually get a bag of spuds when they need them and our potatoes usually last us to around June some of our fellow gardeners say growing a main crop of potatoes is a waste of time but we need to  grow our potatoes for crop rotation so one plot grows potatoes one year and then the second year its mixed veg no potatoes on that plot  then its back to potatoes the next year and so on but i have to say I've never counted the cost of growing our main potato crop its just something I have been doing for years

so good luck with your self sufficiency potato crop John ;)
