There are times when I wonder why I spend time, effort and money on growing my own veggies. Is it really worth the bother?

Financially no. Flavour yes.
Think of it in terms of gym membership - instead of paying to work out in a room full of other sweaty bodies you get the work out in the fresh air.
Cook allotment carrots with supermarket carrots, sit at the table and then try telling me you cannot tell which are shop bou8ght and which are home grown. Simples.

It was a tongue in cheek title, really. There are lots of reasons, but watching my grandson picking and eating tomatoes just made my day.

Just one of the reasons John, just one. There are too many to list and not many of them are to do with lucre, my friend :D :D

When we sadly gave up our first allotment in 1990, (some time before we started again), I did a rough calculation on how much everything cost, but also looked at the benefits.
During the seven years we'd been down there, we'd made a financial profit of just £10.00 per year.
The effort, the fun, the disappointment, the number of red cabbages to feed the village - twice, the taste, the feel of a crunchy carrot, was just a fabulous 'something else'...

There aren't many hobbies that give you hours of pleasure and actually pay you £10 a year! :)
