Plant advice
« on: July 15, 2012, 15:09 »
Right then folks I am redesigning the back garden and since we miss teh chooks so much we are building a run at the top of the garden.

Im going with woodchip as usual for ground coverage in the garden so the dog cannot kill it and so the chooks (when we get them) can have a stratch around.

BUT I would like to put in some sort of plants like grasses etc but what dont the old chooks like to eat?

Any advice is most welcome!

I have some low growing black grass type plants that they dont touch, they spread albeit very slowly. Dont know th proper name but if you google black grass it will come up.
I've planted a forsythia a couple of months ago that they havent touched.
They havent touched my white spirea shrub but have eaten the other spirea's
Anything you plant would need to get established as they are likely to scratch around the roots.
Mine love bamboo. they eat the lower leaves then sit in between the stalks on hot days

GA, mine dont like nettles either.

Mine have demolished most of the plants in my garden but haven't touched the camelias, rhododendrons or peonies, they just use them to hide in.

That is great news that you will be getting to enjoy chooks again min200.  :)

Mine tend to demolish their favourite plants, Comfrey, Himalayan Knotweed and Asplenium scolopendrium Cristatum (an everygreen fern).  They have shredded the established plants and then wait for them to try sending out juicy new growth!  ::)  The rest of the garden which is mainly established shrubs they seem to have an odd peck here and there without too much damage.

Not all chooks are the same, just like us peeps they can have different likes and dislikes when it comes to what they eat.  Safetst thing would be to go for shruby things with thick leaves.
