Roofing material for chicken run question
« on: April 25, 2010, 20:28 »
I am about to build my Mk2 chicken run, this time with a proper roof.   Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I can put a roof on it cheaply please?  It's a very basic design, either square or oblong according to how it goes on the day.  The roof would be just a single slope from one side to the other.

I would be forever grateful and so would my hens Tikka, Korma and Masala. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

The best (read cheapest, easiest) way I could find was with clear plastic roofing.

I have this http://www.wickes.co.uk/Clear-PVCu-Corrugated-Sheet/invt/240152 over a mesh roof for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. I think it was 50 quid for 10 sheets.

I saw that too but I want something that will give them shade.  Also, I don't want to pay that much as I have just invested in yet another des res for them to go inside the run. ::)

It was the cheapest solid material I could find when I looked - wood and felt was far more expensive.

Could you live with looking at something like a tarp ? perhaps an army camouflage one?

I've got a few sheets of corrugated asbestos you can have  :D

Just the job.  I'll sand them down and give them a coat of lead paint. ::)

Looks like a trip to Wickes tomorrow.  I'm shocked at the price of wood, even just sheeting material. :(

for the shaded part Ice you could use onduline (another brand is called coroline) this again is corrugated but is usually black or green. You may find it cheaper to buy these items from a builders merchants rather than B&Q, wicks etc. Just give them a quick call before setting out  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.
