suitability for use for weed control/paths
« on: March 12, 2014, 14:49 »
Friend who works in local supermarket has turned up with several of the large banners that the store put on it's outside walls to advertise special offers. When offer is over banners are thrown out. They are thick plastic similar to weed control stuff, white backs but multicoloured printing on the front. Will these be safe to use or are the inks likely to be on the not recommended list?

i would say any chemicals has been washed of by time you get them so go for it, anything that saves some money can't be bad.

as for using them as paths they will get very slippery when wet.

I tend to agree, particularly about the slipperiness ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

For weed control it probably doesn't have the same properties as the weed control fabric you can buy, which is permeable and lets water drain through it, so it would be more like covering with plain black plastic sheeting, except that facing upwards it will be either white, which won't warm the soil as well as black, or advertising out-of-date offers, which may or may not appeal to passing wood pigeons (depending on their reading skills, intelligence ::) and supermarket preferences. )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

3a that sounds like a good idea, they are very bright white and carrot fly can't read that the offer was for carrots. Hope they don't recognize the picture.
