acid soil discovered after planting
« on: June 10, 2011, 10:59 »
AFTER planting beans and finding they were not thriving - and realising it had to be more than just the weather - I tested the soil (I know, I know) and found it very acid. Is there anything I can give the plants to give them a boost? I know I can't lime now - too late!

Welcome to the forums. :) I've moved your question into grow your own to give it better chance of being answered.

Feel free to introduce yourself in welcome too though.

You can apply lime, hoe it in and water it well. The best lime for this is hydrated lime. This is very fine so do it on a calm day or you might get it in your eyes.

If the beans have not grown too big you could dig them up and replant them elswhere.

Are you sure it is acidity that is the problem. Dig a plant up and look at the roots. If there are no new white roots it may be acidity. Look at the roots with a hand lens, if there are tiny brown bite marks you may have something chewing them.

Mix some lime into a full watering can and water like this regularly.
That should offset the acidity.

Just wanted to check the test that you did - some of them are very unreliable :(

Are there Rhododendrons and Azaleas growing in gardens near you?  That would be a good sign that you are on acid soil.
