Hi,
Been picking up lots of these for free outside the local supermarket. They are used for flowers and are certainly strong enough to get a few years use out of them.
I've put the dimensions on the picture. Does anyone use these in their PT or greenhouse and what would be a suitable crop for these?
I'm thinking peppers/chillis but would welcome suggestions...

Many members use them for tomatoes, amongst other things, a search on "flower bucket" will throw back numerous results.

I have used them for both chilli's and peppers which the plants seemed happy with.
I also use them for seasonal flower displays, and use them for baby carrots and baby parsnip and herbs

Which Supermarkets give these away, when I asked at one they say they re-use them?

I'm getting the odd free one from our local coop who dump them outside. Morrisons will sell the at 8 for 99p but you have to ask at the fruit and veg section.

A@da used to give them for free,not sure if they still do. I cut the bottoms out & use them for my tomatoes on ring culture system.

I get the same ones from my local co-op , I have approx 250 of them . Rather then throw them away ,they
give them to me , when I ask, in return I give the staff some free fruit and veg .
I grow chillis ,peppers tomatoes herbs and strawberries in them ,I put drainage holes about 2 inches up from
the base in the sides .

Why not holes in the bottom? I've drilled one and it is a bit thin but worked ok.

If you make the holes a bit higher it gives a small reservoir of water at the bottom of the pot - I make holes with a red hot skewer.

Mine mostly have tomatoes, but a couple last year had basil and another two have rosemary and sage bushes grown from cuttings.

@mum isn't that inviting waterlogging problems? How come standard plant pots don't come with the holes in the side?

I do the same with my soldering iron about 10-15mm up from the bottom four at 12,3,6 & 9 o'clock or 0,90, 180 & 270 degrees and I put in the water retaining gel in with the compost in the bottom 10-15mm

no worse than standing them in saucers of water, is it? and some pots do come with side holes rather than bottom ones ;)

Aubergines grew well for me last year in pots like these.
I like em for sinking next to pumpkins to give lots of water and feed direct to the roots. ;)

We do french beans in ours and we also do the whole in the side trick like MOS :nowink:

Currently until I decide where they will finally live I have two cherry trees and two plum trees from lidl sitting in four I got from the co-op

My local M0rris0ns do bundles (anything from 6-12 pots) of these for 99p. Quite often they are in a mixture of sizes too.

I just got 2 lots of them from morrisons. O paid 99p for 8 which is still really good but not as good as free :)
I was thinking of growing my peppers chill's tomatoes and cucumbers in them instead of grow bags.

Don't forget to burn holes just up from the bottom of them (say 10 to13mm 1/2" old money) with a soldering iron or skewer heated up on the gas :)

Why didn't I think of that :wacko:. All my holes are made at the bottom of thye pot. Good tip. Thanks.
