Title: Flat Coopers - Dark Ale
Post by: Sadgit on February 12, 2009, 08:41
Posted this on a Beer forum, but not getting much joy so thought I would try here :)

"I am fairly new to all of this and have made 2 great batches of "Samsons Strong Ale" over the last couple of months. So decided to try something new "Coopers - Dark Ale". I bottled it last Sat and tried 1 last night (as a test of course). Well it was really flat, it had a tiny bit of fizz but not a great deal. I 100% know I added the primer just under 1/2 teaspoon of sugar for each of the 500ml bottles.

Any reason why it would be flat? and could I uncap all the bottles and add a bit more primer?"

Basically I think I left it fermenting too long (2 weeks), as I couldn't get it bottled because of work etc... and the yeast has all done and dusted before I bottled.

So should I get another yeast sachet and add it to some hot water then empty all the beer back in to a bucket, mix the yeast into it and then rebottle?

It has now been bottled for 2 weeks and still flat and had 1 week in a warm kitchen and then 1 week in a cool place.

Cheers
Mark

I wouldnt Add more yeast as this will make it taste funny
so either drink it flat or add more sugar (but not too much)

I think real ale should be prety flat but it is a matter of taste

thanks.. for some reason I never saw your reply. Anyway, I added a tiny amount of extra yeast as it had all died and adding more sugar wouldn't have made it fizz.

So I put the yeast into some warm water let it do its stuff in the water then used a pipette to put 3ml of it into each bottle. So far so good, as I tested 1 bottle and it is now starting to get a nice amount of fizz and the flavour hasn't been changed by the small amount of extra yeast.

Oh I don't want it fizzy like lager, but mine had zero fizz.. all is good in the world again :D :D

Problem when it was flat it went down far too easily :D :D saying that even with a bit of fizz it still is flying down my neck :)

Wish I had a pressure barrel, as I gave mine away last year :( it won't last more than a couple of weeks in our house :)
