That fragile fleece
« on: March 04, 2023, 22:48 »
I find the stuff only lasts a while so I won't buy it. Is there an alternative? I can think of window netting but no one seems to chuck that out now.

What are you wanting to use it for?

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well, just to act as cover in case of late frost.

There are different grades of fleece.  Some of the fleece sold in garden centres is very flimsy and doesn’t last, but you can get better quality fleece on line.

This is an alternative that has a longer life.  I haven’t bought it myself, but I do use this on-line supplier and their stuff is good.

I use their very fine veg mesh for onions and find it also works as frost protection, so a bit more expensive but does both jobs ;)

Just bought some from Amazonia to cover my mini-greenhouse inside the main one in case of late frosts. It's called:
Garden Plant Fleece Frost Protection - 2m x 10m 40gsm Large Winter Outdoor Horticultural Fleece Cover & Outside Heavy Duty Thick Protector Blanket Netting Roll | Reusable Freeze Cloth
Visit the Flashbee Store
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My frost protection needs are usually just for a day or two at a time, and I don't need to cover very much area at one time. I make do by covering with old bed sheets.  Probably not practical if you are covering many feet of row, and need a true row cover.

Double Bed sheet?

I assume the question is regarding sheet sizes for different mattress sizes.  I use whatever we have saved in our small collection of old sheets we save for purposes like painting drop cloth; the same ones are used to cover vegetables as needed.  They vary from twin-size sheet (66 x 96 inches) to king-size (102 x 105 inches).

For frost protection, I view covers as a (very) temporary means to protect against a brief late cold snap in the spring, or to protect flowers, house plants or maturing vegetables against an early frost.
