I was recently at an apple tree pruning workshop, and one of the other people there mentioned that she had an electric saw (battery powered) that was useful when pruning trees etc.  She said it looked a bit like an electric carving knife.

I rather like the idea, but wouldn't know where to start looking. I've read about reciprocating saws and other types.

Any ideas and other thoughts??

I have a reciprocating saw I use for pruning large things I don't care about but are too thin for the chainsaw, I wouldn't let it anywhere near my apple trees though. I prefer a good hand saw,  my budget doesn't run to them but the Silky Fox saws come very highly rated.

It sounds like and looks like the shredders farmers rig to the back of their tractors and I suspect with equally ruinous results to the hedges and trees.

Snap, anything too thick for the clippers gets sawn with the recip, too old now to manually saw them.

I used a...

 BLACK+DECKER 400 V Scorpion Electric Saw with 3 Blades and 10mm Stroke Length, KS890ECN-GB

...to take out two whole apple trees including a 6" diameter trunk, but it is corded, so needs to be near power!

I've also used one of these...

BLACK+DECKER BDCJS20C 20V MAX Jigsaw with Battery and Charger

...but it is a bit ungainly!

It's just a cheap and cheerful screwfix special, I burnt the motor out on the last one cutting out ash tree roots.    Titan or something but the budget bands are all the same thing with a different sticker on, needs mains power but there are battery versions at a higher price point.

Just like a jigsaw it's a case of using the right blade for the task, I have a selection of wood, wet wood and bimetal for when you know there's a nail in there somewhere  .

I got this one, mainly used for cutting logs up for the fire where I dont need the chain saw, oh and remember my plot is directly behind the house so I have 240v available

A neighbour about five doors up has an orchard of apple trees.
Trimmed beautifully each year.
He is in his late 80s and trims them all from a an adjustable platform bench using a pole saw.
His one does branches up to 8 inches with ease.
Not sure on the price, but he has two he bought about three years ago.
First is a corded one from the B&Q McAllister range and the second is a de walt cordless.
He says the dewalt cordless is heavy even with the harness strap like the other has.
He prefers the mcallister, not so heavy to use and lets another much younger family member use the cordless one.
