I was asking my joiner about how I should maintain some wooden window frames and he suggested an orbital sander would make it much more straightforward than having to sand the lot by hand.
I don't need an all-singing and dancing one, but any recommendations for brand, tips for what to avoid etc?

What about a delta sander Yorkie, or even one of those "mouse" things? I think you would Google palm sander for one of those. OH has a Black and Decker orbital sander with delta attachment that he got for a very small amount of money and likes very much, but its possibly a more involved thing than you need for window frames.

I bought one of those "el-cheapo" ones from Argos, I can't remember how much, but it was very cheap. I haven't managed to kill it yet, but I'm still working on it after 3 years.

Thanks, both
In addition to standard window frames, I need to sand the little bars on small panes in a door, and bannister spindles.
I thought about this one (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7112221/Trail/searchtext%3ESANDER.htm) as it has a special attachment for those little difficult areas - seems OK on the write-ups but I guess it could just be a gimmick.
No dust collection bag but I don't think I want to pay another £17 for that ::)

Glazing bars on doors I would do by hand.

Little bit late reply, but...
1) cheap sanders vibrate much more
2) best choice is 1/3sheet Makita sander
3) "mouse" sanders are usually good, but cost of pads
4) best way to remove old paint is use heatgun

More than a little bit late Vit, eight months is quite a long time. :D

"4) best way to remove old paint is use a heatgun"
...and this is also the best bit of kit to give your chiminea a blast to get it going...
