dehydrating bean sprouts
« on: December 22, 2014, 14:55 »
Has anyone ever successfully dehydrated bean sprouts. I buy them in 500g packs and only ever use half of them, I put the leftovers in the fridge but they do not keep well and they end up on the compost heap. It would be useful if they could be dehydrated and then hydrated successfully to use in stews, stir fries etc.

No idea if they can be dehydrated but really doubt they would be appetising if rehydrated!

Bean sprouts are really easy to do yourself and mung beans are really cheap to buy. You can buy special sprouters  or just bung them in a jar with some water and the lid cracked. That way you only need to sprout what you need and save a fortune.

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Wasn't there a health scare about them a couple of years ago, salmonella I think, might need to be extra careful

I have grown them in the past but cannot be bothered with the faff of keep changing the water and once or twice forgot about them and they went bad.
Yesterday I had the dehydrator on to dry some bananas as we have ended up with too many to eat before we go away for Christmas so I put a few bean sprouts in as well. They dried well and this morning I have rehydrated them and they are perfect, ;)
