Brown Garlic Leaves
« on: April 15, 2013, 10:57 »

A few of my garlic leaves seem to be turning brown and withering. They are quite exposed, the whole site is, and I'm wondering if this is just a bit of wind burn.

I have a few rows of garlic in and these are the only ones, about half a dozen or so, that are affected.

If it was wind damage i would expect to see the whole row affected. I would carefully dig up one plant to make sure all is well with the bulb. Any sign's of mildew or a white fluffy growth on the bulb spell's problem's.

I had a feeling that might be the case, but I won't get up there until Saturday now. Just hope it's nothing that will spread :D

I put these in in September and one of the varieties was Early Solent Wight, I was rather hoping it was just being very early :D

 somehow I think you are being a little optimistic there

As for the yellow leaves, I'm inclined to think it is not a soil pathogen - it's been so cold this winter/spring and they (bacteria or fungus/mould) usually like mild conditions before doing damage.  Although it may just be a few showing signs, is it possible those are in a slightly different environment to the others?  The photo shows a structure to the left so that may be doing something to the wind/cold/snow drifts/lack of water .... ?

That's just a little fleece tunnel, it's not much higher than the garlic, but I did only put it there a couple of weeks ago.

Pdblake - The answer to your question in two words... the weather.

All the garlic I've seen on our site is the same - even mine..

Some of mine look like that I have put it down to possibly frost burn, because after that rain it is growing like mad.

I do hope so. I'll lift one at the weekend though, just to be safe ;)

Mine are the same.  I had put it down to cold.  Mine are growing in a builder's rubble sack filled with old hen poo and their bedding.  They seem to be doing ok on it apart from the yellowing tips

You are not on your own...I have brown / yellow tipped leaves as well. I think it is the weather. Now the wind has moved to the south and temperatures have risen I am expecting a growth spurt any time soon.

Thanks all, that's very reassuring. This is the first time I've grown garlic on the plot. It's normally in the much more sheltered back garden.
