Does anyone keep Andalusians? *Photo finally added*
« on: August 27, 2011, 19:17 »
My broody hatched a clutch of mixed eggs about 6 weeks ago now.  Three of the chicks are Andalusians and I was wondering if anyone had experience of these birds?  They seem a fairly rare breed (according to Google) and I can't find much info regarding the chicks and if they are a difficult breed to sex or not.

Any advice anyone could offer would be appreciated.  I will try and post pictures if anyone is interested.

I dont keep them myself but I have been looking into getting a couple myself (they look great and we lived in Andalucia for quite a while!)

From the full grown birds I have seen you have the usual differences ie larger wattles and crop on the cockerals.

Stick some pics of your chicks on!! (its the law here you know!)

I will take photos tomorrow of the little horrors (they are the naughtiest teenage chooks I've ever known!) as the weather is pants up here at the moment.

I have one black one I am convinced is a boy - he was born with a large comb!  It's such a shame as he is a beautiful bird with a real purple sheen to his feathers and a few white feathers on his chest.

The other two are blue and have much smaller combs so fingers crossed they're girls  :)

As promised, a photo of "Miguel" the black Andalusian - I know he's a boy as he's just starting to find his voice at 8 WEEKS!   ???

I don't mind at all - the photo doesn't really do him justice as you can't really see the purples and beetle green sheen to his feathers.

I'm a bit sad as I will have to find him a home as I can't keep cockerels.

He's ever so inquisitive cheeky and will no doubt be very handsome indeed when he's all grown up.
